Bench press research notes

Why use a predicted 1RM?

A submaximal repetition set can be used to estimate maximal strength without requiring the user to enter a true maximum. Published studies have examined the relationship between repetitions-to-failure and 1RM, but no prediction equation is perfect for every exercise or person.

Why show multiple equations?

Research has compared multiple prediction equations and found differences in accuracy depending on the lift, population and repetition range. Showing several estimates makes that model disagreement visible.

Why cap the tool at 12 reps?

Linear and nonlinear equations can become less representative as repetition counts increase. Research on bench press prediction has specifically examined the performance of equations across different repetition ranges, supporting caution with higher-repetition inputs.

Research is not a guarantee

A published equation is evidence for a mathematical relationship in a studied context. It is not a guarantee that an individual's next set will produce the predicted number.
