“How many plates?” depends on the target total weight, the bar's actual weight and the plates available. The same target can therefore require different combinations in different gyms.
Basic calculation
First subtract the bar weight from the target. Then divide the remaining weight equally between the two sides.
Each-side load = (target weight − bar weight) ÷ 2
Example
For a 225 lb target with a 45 lb bar, 180 lb remains for plates. That is 90 lb per side, which can be built with 45 + 45 lb on each side.
Why the result may differ at your gym
Bars can have different weights, and gyms may not carry every plate denomination. Use the calculator's bar-weight input and verify the actual plates available.
